What Moisturizer After Retinol?

When choosing a moisturizer to use after applying retinol, consider your skin type. Those with dry skin should opt for richer lotions or creams suitable for dry skin. On the other hand, individuals with oily skin might prefer gel-based moisturizers.

The sequence of application is also crucial, especially with different formulations. If you're using a retinol product formulated as an oil or cream, but your moisturizer is a gel type without occlusives like dimethicone, apply the gel moisturizer first. This method ensures better absorption, as it's like applying a hydrating toner, essence, or serum before thicker products. If the retinol is applied first, it may block the moisturizer's absorption, reducing its effectiveness.

For dry skin, the process is more straightforward. Moisturizers for dry skin usually contain ingredients like ceramides, shea butter, oils, and dimethicone that help seal in moisture. These should be applied after the retinol product. Regardless of skin type, it's advisable to wait a few minutes between applying different products to ensure each one is absorbed properly and works effectively.
