Viking vs Saxon Shield Clash

Shield wall combat defined many fights between Viking Danes and Anglo-Saxons in England. Both armies organized infantry into dense lines, using overlapping shields to create a moving barrier. After an opening exchange of missiles, the formations pushed together and combat narrowed to thrusts, swings, and shoves at close range. Once fatigue, injury, or uneven ground opened a gap, the weaker side’s line began to fold. The soldiers who kept their ranks longest usually decided the battle.
