The Great Molasses Flood, Boston 1919

The Great Molasses Flood, also called the Boston Molasses Disaster, struck Boston, Massachusetts on 15 January 1919. A 50-foot storage tank at the Purity Distilling Company site near Commercial Street failed and released more than two million gallons of molasses into the North End. Witnesses described a rumble, then a surge that smashed structures, bent rails, and trapped victims as the cold syrup thickened. The final toll was 21 dead and roughly 150 injured. The cleanup and investigations became a lasting Boston history story and a major U.S. industrial accident case.
