This has an AP projectile that weight 165 grains and has a Manganese-Molybdenum core with an approximate Brinell hardness of 717. This ammo is test against mild steel (about 120-130 brinell hardness) and AR500 plate (approximate 500 brinell hardness). Molybdenum steel projectiles like this are not as hard as many other armor piercing rounds yet is still harder than both the regular steel and even the AR500 plate. Remarkably the recovered projectile is still sharp and pointed after piercing 1" thick steel!

This round was originally adopted in 1939 with a 4% tungsten penetrating core, AKA Electric Furnace Steel. In 1942 this was changed to a manganese-molybdenum core which offered the same penetrating abilities.
