STORYLINE:
Thousands of people living or visiting the Moroccan city of Marrakech flooded to transfusion centres to donate blood on Sunday, hoping to help the scores of injured after the nation’s strongest earthquake in more than a century.
People aged between 18 and 60 queued at centres across the country after a call by Moroccan authorities for donations.
On Saturday, one centre in Marrakech opened for twelve hours and said more than 800 people donated.
”We saw on the news that they needed donations of blood. And I didn’t even think about it twice, I just ran here.." explained one woman, Jalila Guerina, giving blood there on Sunday.
A director of the centre who preferred to remain anonymous told The Associated Press that over 2,000 people would likely donate blood by close of play on Sunday.
According to the Moroccan Interior Ministry, more than 2,000 people were injured in Friday's quake - 1,404 among them seriously.
More than 2,000 people are dead — a number that is expected to rise.
Blood donation centres in Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier and Fes also received a rush of donations.
