2019 Updates from Gates Belt Drive, Pinion Gearbox, and Rohloff E-14 at Interbike

We looked at a titanium prototype gravel grinder with some Ortleib bags and the Gates Centertrack belt. Paul told me that the company has been making belts for bicycles for the past 11 years, since 2007. We checked out a printed bicycle frame from a company called Arevo. Belts don't stretch or rust, they tend to last twice as long as chains, they can be a time saver but are also clean and quiet. Gates now makes a couple of different belt colors (red, white, black).

We moved on to discuss the pinion gearbox which was developed by some German mountain bikers who wanted a cleaner, tougher drivetrain. A few ebikes do use this system, but they have to use a hub motor because the bottom bracket won't accommodate a mid-drive because of the gearbox. One good example of this is Desiknio, which sells in Europe. Pinion comes in 6, 9, 12, and 18 speed. The 18 speed gives you a 636-degree range for maximum climbing power. The 12 speed has a 600-degree range. Pinion frees up your wheels for easier maintenance, reduces unsprung weight, and keeps the drivetrain weight at the center of the bike for optimal balance. You don't have to worry about derailleurs getting bent. Towards the end, we looked at the Nicolai E-Box electric full suspension bike with gates belt drive and electronic Rohloff E-14.

It was neat to see the full suspension bike with Gates Carbon belt drive. They created a custom backside idler and bash guard to protect the drivetrain.
