Every Derms’ Dirty Little Secret: The Skincare Product We Are Using Every Night
What is your dermatologist’s dirty little secret?
Your dermatologists are likely on some form of retinoid as it is almost too good to be true. I have been on one for the last 8 years!
We know that it has many benefits including:
1. Acne treatment and prevention
2. Anti aging where it helps with wrinkles and age spots
3. Superficial acne scarring
As a pill, this vitamin-A derived ingredient is an excellent treatment for acne: isotretinoin (aka Accutane).
Use your retinoid (tretinoin, Retin-A, retinol, retinyl, tazarotene, alphaRet) at bedtime (sunlight will deactivate this vitamin A-derived medicated topical medication) and remember to stay patient and consistent to get results. Definitely consider incorporating this into your skincare regimen for acne and antiaging and know that you will not see antiaging effects overnight and know that this process is a marathon, not a sprint!!
Various myths covered in this video: Do retinoids thin out your skin? Do retinoids make you sensitive to the sun?
I primarily use SkinBetter Science AlphaRet (we sell this in our office).
*Update since filming this*
AlphaRet was exclusively sold out of dermatologists’ offices and I had to see a patient before they could obtain this. Now, people are obtaining online without seeing a dermatologist which is news to me. I always say to see your derm for this medication to review the side effects and precautions when starting on this (efficacy is similar to prescription strength tretinoin 0.025% in a study https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28762645/ ).
Retinol honorable mentions:
1. RoC https://amzn.to/3c1YXcD
2. Skinceuticals Retinol (higher price point but we use their medical grade chemical peels in my practice): https://amzn.to/3cd38SU
Retinyl palmotate to consider: Skintensive (affordable, also with bonus ingredients like arnica, Vitamin C and E): https://amzn.to/3fjeFSC
Do not use any retinoid if pregnant.
