Cassowary rehabilitation centre closes as another cassowary dies on roads in Cassowary Coast

The causes for cassowary injury are not being addressed by the authorities so the need for the Cassowary rehabilitation centre is a crucial part of cassowary protection.

Another cassowary has been killed on a road that cassowaries are known to cross frequently. The death toll of these endangered birds on Cassowary Coast Roads is a shame felt by our community and the inaction of the CCRC to address the ongoing carnage of our endangered icon is a disgrace.

There are solutions. The 5 year old JCU traffic management report made clear recommendations of which not one has been implemented.

Decisions being made by the CCRC are fact increasing the threats to the cassowary in our shire. The latest one being the removal of covenants on private land that protect cassowary habitat. The CCRC has just bought down a $70m budget. The covenants only contribute $100,000 in loss of revenue and were put in place specifically to protect cassowary habitat.
Unregulated breeding and sale of large dogs is rife within the Cassowary Coast. Dogs are also regularly seen roaming

It is quite clear that the CCRC has no intention to take positive action to help reduce the known threats to the cassowary of habitat loss, car strike and dog attack.
