Making a DRESS out of RECTANGLES: Sewing a Capsule Wardrobe

Make this dress yourself! Etsy link: https://studioceshop.etsy.com/listing/1898520645/make-a-dress-from-rectangles-pattern

I made a dress out of rectangles as a very simple DIY dress for my Sewing A Capsule Wardrobe series. My main goal was to make a dress using this blue and cream checkerboard pattern fabric, so I chose a very simple dress pattern to go with the printed fabric. I ended up drafting a simple dress pattern using only rectangles to make sewing with a striped fabric easier.

I self-drafted this dress myself and also have the full tutorial written down as a pattern drafting tutorial available in my Etsy shop (link at top of description). Each rectangle for the dress pattern is drafted using custom measurements for bust, waist, arm, and bicep measurements. All the rectangles fit together simply for a beginner pattern drafting technique.

The bodice is drafted as a single rectangle along the shoulders as a fold line with a neckline cut out of the center. The sleeves are a rectangle, and all the skirt tiers are rectangles as well. You can alter this pattern as you wish by shortening or lengthening the sleeves and tiers.

The neckline facing is the only curved seam in this whole dress. The facing can be traced around the neckline and hand sewn on with a running stitch.

I used many different sewing methods to sew this dress, including hand sewing running and back stitches, sewing straight and triple stitches on my sewing machine, as well as serging the seams closed. I gathered all of my skirt tiers by hand, but gathering with a sewing machine is also a viable option. You're welcome to finish your edges and hems however you want, so get creative with this pattern.

I sewed elastic to the waistline and sleeve cuffs using a triple stitch on my machine while stretching the elastic behind my sewing machine.

Drafting the pattern for and sewing this dress took about 5 days of practical sewing, but 2 months if you count real-time. So if you have a week to sew everyday, you can make this dress in a week. But if you can only sew on weekends, then give yourself a month or two to make this dress. I ended up taking 2 full months to make this dress because I got distracted partway through, and kept losing my focus.

Yes this dress was inspired by Dorothy from The Wizard Of Oz. The fabric I used was a large yardage (maybe 4 yards of fabric) that I inherited from my aunt, so I really wanted to make a nice dress with it. Since I don't normally wear blue and cream, I took inspiration from Dorothy's Wizard Of Oz dress for the basic silhouette and I'm so glad I did because I absolutely love this dress and these scrumptious, scrumptious ruffles. This dress is the perfect picnic dress for my Capsule Wardrobe
