Assessing Veins When Starting an IV Catheter | Finding Veins & Tourniquet Nursing Skill
Before inserting an IV catheter, you'll want to assess the veins on your patient to determine the best vein location to start the IV.
Before practicing nursing skills, you always want to verify the latest protocols in your area.
Applying a tourniquet can apply pressure and allow veins to come closer to the surface of the skin. However, you don't always have to apply a tourniquet, and if the patient has very large, engorged veins, applying too much pressure can blow the vein.
There are several places you can start an IV. As a nurse, you'll want to look for common areas where veins are found. The antecubital area on the anterior surface of the elbow is a great area to find veins, especially if you need a large vein for a blood draw procedure.
There are also veins on the anterior and posterior surface of the forearm. Finally, the hand is a very common area to find veins for starting an IV.
However, the dorsum of the hand can be more sensitive than other areas, and because those veins tend to be more superficial, they can be prone to rolling.
When selecting a vein, you'll want to consider the gauge size of the needle so that the vein can accommodate it.You'll also want to consider the best location based on the patient's mobility or comfort.
