How to Prepare for an IV Insertion | Intravenous Catheter Supplies Setup Nursing Skill
IV supplies kit preparation and setup: nursing skill demonstration and IV tips. When starting a peripheral I.V. (intravenous catheter), you'll want to gather your supplies and prepare them before use. Before gathering your supplies or performing any nursing skills, you'll want to verify the latest protocols with your healthcare facility.
Some of the supplies you'll need when starting an IV include the following:
-IV Start Kit - this contains many useful items such as a tourniquet, gauze, tape to secure the IV, a label, and so on.
- Extension Tubing - this may be included with some IV start kits, but if not, you'll want to grab one of these.
- IV Catheter - Be sure to pick an appropriately sized needle gauge for your IV. Common sizes included 18, 20, and 22 gauge.
- Curos Cap - this cap prevents the spreading of germs.
-Saline Flush - this will be used to flush the IV after insertion.
-Gloves
Always verify the date on your supplies to ensure they are safe to use. You'll want to open the packages and place them so that they are convenient to grab, as you will often have only one free hand when inserting an IV. I often keep them in their package to reduce risk of contamination.
You'll want to remove the air bubble out of the saline flush by pressing the plunger to remove the air and a bit of saline. You'll also want to attach the saline flush to the extension tubing and remove all of the air by flushing the saline through the tubing line.
Loosening the cap on the extension tubing makes it much easier to remove once you are ready to attach it to the IV.
