The anterior cerebral artery is divided into 5 segments from A1 to A5.
A1( precommunicating)segment: originating from the internal carotid artery and terminating at the anterior communicating artery (ACOM). This segment gives medial lenticulostriate arteries which irrigates the caudate nucleus and the anterior limb of the internal capsule.
A2 segment (postcommunicating): originating at the ACOM, terminating at the genu of the corpus callosum. From this segement are arising the recurrent artery of Heubner, Medial frontobasal artery and Frontopolar artery.
At the Genu of corpus callosum the anterior cerebral artery bifurcates into two terminal branches: The pericallosal artery which runs above the corpus callosum and The callosomarginal artery which runs in the cingulate sulcus, above the cingulate gyrus.
The A3 segment of the ACA is that part of the pericallosal artery which extends around the genu of corpus callosum.
A4 segment: is that part of the pericallosal artery which extends above the body of the corpus callosum anterior to the plane of the coronal suture.
The A5 segment is above the body of the corpus callosum posterior to the plane of the coronal suture.
From the pericallosal artery which includes the A3,A4 and A5 segments are arising Precuneal branches and Parieto-Occipital branches.
Finally the Callosomarginal artery gives the following branches: Anteromedial frontal branch, Intermediomedial frontal branch, Posteromedial frontal branch, Paracentral branches and Cingular branch.
