How to tie a simple D-rig using ONLY mono + a trick running lead system

Best D-rig setup with only mono, no other components. Mega effective. Combine this D-rig with a swivel lead, fox run ring kit and tapered bore beads to create the ultimate carp rig that tells you if you’ve been done.

The D-rig is easy to tie, easy to use, easy to cast and works for a very wide range of carp fishing situations. It’s suitable for carp of all sizes, from 10lb to 70lbs, and carp anglers of any level of ability, from beginners to highly experienced, will find it of use.

This new and improved running rig design is an evolution from the first semi fixed running rig setup I came up with 10 years ago which you can see here: https://youtu.be/ED58TfFEcqM. That rig is still very successful today and is great for short range but it has some limitations and I’ve decided to create a new improved version of that rig.

I wanted a simple running rig that can be used for medium and long range, that is tangle free, easy to fish with and extremely effective for difficult to catch carp. Like the first design, I also want it to tell me if I’ve been done, ie if a carp has ejected the rig before I’ve struck.

Instead of using supple braid like I did for my original inline rig, here I’m using some regular monofilament as hooklink, Berkley Big Game in 20lbs. The rig itself is a refined version of the classic D-rig but I’ve eliminated the rig ring by changing the way the bait is mounted. All you need is a short length of mono to attach the bait to the D-rig. By using the cut and blob technique, I also eliminate the need for a separate hair stop or a bait stop. Due to the stiffness of the mono, shrink tube or kicker are also not required. In order to change rigs quickly, I’ve used a loop to loop connection so that each rig can be looped directly onto the swivel without having to cut off or re-tie any knots. This also eliminates the need for a separate link loop and quicklinks and silicon sleeves. All you need is some mono and a really sharp hook.

For the lead system, I’ve changed from an inline lead to a swivel lead which works great with the stiffer mono and can be cast much further. This means that the rig is much easier to cast at any range and completely tangle free. I use the Fox run ring kit to create the running lead setup.

To build the lead system, I use:
- a piece of spliced leadless leader (Korda Duracord)
- a size 8 ring swivel
- a Fox run ring kit
- two tapered bore beads to create a bite indication trick

To attach the mono rig to the lead system, I use a simple loop which means that there’s no need for a quick link or a silicon sleeve or an anti tangle sleeve. That loop connection is very strong and it allows you to swap rigs very easily.

One of the main advantages of this rig is that you can eliminate a lot of components:
No hair stop
No rig ring or micro swivel
No shrink tube or kicker
No dedicated hooklink material
No rig putty or sinkers
No anti tangle sleeve
No quick link
No silicon sleeve to push over the quick link
No link loop

You can use this rig over a variety of bottoms types from firmer areas like sand, gravel and clay right through to softer areas of silt (use a shorter hooklink of less than 6” /15cms when fishing in silt).

Things to watch out for:
1. When casting this rig with a PVA mesh bag of pellets or crumb or a large PVA stringer, it is possible that on impact with the water the PVA freebies will cause the lower bite indication bead to move a little way up the leader. To solve the problem, just tie a short length of PVA tape above the lower bead to hold it in place on the cast.
2. Over time the lower bead wears and will run too freely on the leader which could lead to false indications of activity from the carp. If this is the case simply change the beads or alternatively add a short piece of shrink tubing to a position just above where the lead sits. This increases the amount of force required to move the lower bite indication bead. This trick can also solve the problem of the PVA mesh bags moving the bead on impact with the water. This shrink tube mod. is also useful if you are using a leader that is too fine in diameter for the beads that you’re using. It’s very important that the bead is still able to separate easily from the shrink tube or the rig becomes dangerous.
