"The White Stripes In The Cold, Cold Night"

"There are song that you you like, songs you love and songs that go beyond all that- they seem to get into your bloodstream. And then they live there forever after.

I bought this CD, "Elephant" by The White Stripes and it was all good. Then I got to this song and literally from the first few seconds, I got that chill you get when you know you're about to hear something you know you're going to fall in love with. Then I hear the voice of Meg White and then, the lyrics. You know those dreams where you find yourself with someone- it could be a friend, family or a complete stranger- and in the dream, you're feeling kinda sad and then this person just shows up out of nowhere and for whatever reason, it's like that person makes everything ok. Then you wake up and you're sad you did, because that dream is over. You can't get it back. You try to hold onto the feeling. The dream sort of leaves this residue behind in your subconscious and you feel this ache that it's over and wasn't real. That's kind of how this song feels to me.

At least, it did all those years ago when I bought this CD and couldn't stop playing it. I was really surprised to find that hearing it recently, the song still affects me the same way, maybe even more so. It's like Meg is singing for everyone hungry for some kind of human connection. "In The Cold, Cold Night sounds exactly as if it were recorded in the cold, cold night- it has an urban blues sound. Jack White's guitar. Jack does just enough. It's like an artist drawing two lines and yet you instantly know exactly what the picture is. Jack remarked how Meg's drum style gave him room to create and here, it's Jack that is giving Meg room to create. I don't know what it is, but whatever it is Meg is doing here really got to me.
