Delhi Yamuna Cleanup : 1,300+ Tonnes Garbage Removed | ₹9,000 Cr 45-Point Plan & Riverfront Revival
The Yamuna River in Delhi is undergoing a comprehensive transformation. Under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Delhi government launched a ₹9,000 Crore, 45-Point Action Plan aimed at rejuvenating the river. This initiative focuses on upgrading sewage treatment plants (STPs), enhancing sewer lines, and implementing interceptor sewers to prevent untreated sewage from entering the river.
Over 1,300 Tonnes Garbage have already been cleared from the river, and two amphibious excavators have been deployed to clean major city drains like Najafgarh. Additionally, 22 major drains are being equipped with STPs to treat sewage before it flows into the Yamuna.
To promote community engagement, the government is developing parks along the Riverfront and organizing evening Aartis. Chief Minister Gupta has also inspected Chhath Puja preparations along the Yamuna, ensuring a safer and more convenient experience for devotees.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has pledged that the Yamuna will be cleaned before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Furthermore, a multi-state plan is in place to clean the river up to Prayagraj within the next seven months.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has established an inter-state task force to curb illegal sand mining along the Yamuna floodplains between Delhi and Ghaziabad. This task force will conduct field investigations and submit reports to enhance transparency.
While significant progress has been made, challenges remain, including untreated sewage and industrial pollution. Independent monitoring will be essential to track progress and ensure transparency.
The goal is to make the Yamuna cleaner, safer, and culturally vibrant, turning it into a river that Delhi can be proud of.
