From Aleppo to Brooklyn The Jews of Syria

Aleppo, on the traditional East-West trade route had a long-established Jewish community including Arabic-speaking indigenous Jews and 'Francos' who had come from the West. The community suffered and eventually disappeared consequential to the opening of the Suez Canal, the Young Turk movement, the partition of the Ottoman Empire, and then the forces of Arab nationalism. A significant portion of the Syrian Jewish community migrated to the United States where they established a vibrant community in Brooklyn, New York.
