Yiddish-Speaking Brooklyn | On The Grid with Zephyr Teachout | Ep 1
Explore the cultural differences of three Hasidic Yiddish speaking communities in Brooklyn through their culture and language. See the insular nature of the Satmar sect in Williamsburg, the outward nature of the Lubavitch of Crown Heights and the ultra-Orthodoxy of the Haredi of Borough Park. We finish the journey with a look at the intersecting musical traditions within various Yiddish speaking communities.
CORRECTION & CLARIFICATION:
A photo included is attributed to Satmar protest of Israel. The photo is of the Neturei Karta and not Satmar.
Periodically during this program, the term ‘Ultra-Orthodox’ is used by speakers to refer to practitioners of Judaism who adhere to specific traditional practices. Since publishing this program in 2015, we have learned that this term is considered pejorative by some people. We regret the use of the term in this episode, and in the future will not use that term. We are confident that the particular use in this episode was not intended to be pejorative and, subject to this expression of regret, we stand by the program.
