Open Veins of Latin America (Final Chapter): A Glimmer of Hope and the Power of Memory

Welcome to the final installment of our series on Eduardo Galeano’s Open Veins of Latin America—the concluding chapter he wrote seven years after the original. In this short but powerful section, Galeano reflects on the brutal dictatorships sweeping Latin America in the early 1970s (Chile under Pinochet, Bolivia under Banzer, and more) and ties them directly to the same extractive forces he’s been detailing since the Spanish Conquest. He reminds us that violence is always used to protect the interests of the powerful, and that “democracy” is allowed only insofar as it doesn’t challenge those at the top. Yet Galeano closes with a spark of optimism—pointing out that memory itself and keeping memory alive is itself a form of revolution. Thank you for joining me on this journey through one of the most iconic and influential books about Latin American history and resistance. Stay tuned for one more wrap-up video, plus the announcement of our next reading project!
