How Hierarchy Took Over Our Minds: Bookchin’s Theory of Rule | Ecology of Freedom Ch. 3-4

In this episode of Champagne Anarchism, I’m digging into Chapters 3 and 4 of Murray Bookchin’s The Ecology of Freedom, two dense, controversial, and surprisingly philosophical chapters that explore how domination didn’t just structure society—it reshaped the human mind.

We cover scarcity, the emergence of hierarchy, patriarchy, the shaman as a proto-political figure, the development of the state, and Bookchin’s provocative claim that the logic of rule has shaped not just our societies, but our capacity to understand the world.

Along the way, we bring in critical reflections from David Graeber and David Wengrow’s The Dawn of Everything, and ask: Even if Bookchin’s anthropology doesn’t hold up—does his critique still matter?

This episode dives into some of the most foundational—and controversial—parts of The Ecology of Freedom. If Bookchin’s anthropology is outdated, what can we still take from his critique of power, consumption, and human nature?

Let me know what you think in the comments—especially if you’re reading along, have thoughts on the Dawn of Everything critique, or want to unpack Bookchin’s theory of the shaman. I read and respond to as many comments as I can.

Next week, we’re hitting Chapters 5 and 6—which marks the halfway point of this monumental book. Thanks for being part of this project, and I’ll see you then.
