Snapshot: Iran War: South Asia Struggles to Secure Energy, Diaspora, Economic Interests

TAG Partner Nisha Biswal says that as the Iran conflict enters its third week, it is becoming more complex and increasingly defined by asymmetric disruption rather than battlefield developments alone. Threats are impacting Persian Gulf energy infrastructure, shipping lanes, and regional commerce — effects felt globally and especially across Asia and South Asia. Iran’s new supreme leader has signaled the conflict could last far longer, with the IRGC preparing for a sustained fight, implying risk premiums and disruptions may persist for weeks or even months. For South Asian governments, the stakes are acute because much of the region’s energy supply — LNG, oil, and LPG cooking fuel — originates in the Gulf. Governments are also managing risks to large diaspora workforces in Gulf states, including worker safety, potential interruptions to remittances, and broader economic fallout. Bangladesh and Nepal face added strain as new governments form amid the crisis.
