Snapshot: Gulf Resilience During the Iran War

TAG Managing Director for GCC Ahmed Helal explains why the Gulf is better positioned than most to weather a severe regional crisis caused by the Iran war: governments can draw on large sovereign wealth funds and central bank reserves to recapitalize banks and sustain critical industries. At the same time, Helal warns that diversification sectors—especially tourism, a major share of GDP in Dubai and Qatar—will be sharply disrupted. Looking beyond the immediate shock, he anticipates a return to economic reform once tensions ease, with Saudi Arabia likely to accelerate market liberalization and foreign investment openings. For now, Gulf leaders’ priority is diplomacy and de-escalation to ensure essential infrastructure and the broader economic backbone are not permanently damaged.
