Stereo Recording Tutorial (Mid Side)
In this video, I show you how to use a mid-side recording technique to get more stereo width from your recordings.
This is especially useful when you want to get mono-compatible stereo width from a single performance. It's also not as complex as it looks, the tutorial only takes a few minutes and then I go on to discuss more advanced concepts. This topic is often made more complex than it needs to be, but to get started you'll need:
1 microphone to record in cardioid mode (Mid)
1 microphone to record in figure 8 mode (Side)
+ Audio Interface, Cables, Computer
(Many portable audio recorders are capable of decoding Mid Side recordings, so check your gear!)
Remember that no matter which technique you use, placing the microphones should be done by ear each time to suit your instrument, playing style and room acoustics - if it sounds good, it's probably good!
