It has been unseasonably warm so far this fall and therefore I was incredibly surprised when I planned an easy solo canoe trip to Little Margaret Lake in the Haliburton Highlands Water Trails to discover the ice is in. I knew someone camping on Big East nearby, so I assumed a bigger lake would be passable. I rerouted the trip to camp on the best backcountry campsite on McEwan Lake and ended up having an amazing time, enjoying a delicious dinner, chicken on the campfire and being reminded of the deafening silence of winter.
