Rohan Ramblings 61: in which Gryfflet helps to evacuate Middlemead

Gryfflet has been hanging around the food-table in the Middlemead Mead Hall but is ready and willing to embark on more investigation. He starts with the Auctioneer who roused his suspicions last time and is sent on several errands as usual. He sets off towards the Stonedeans and we take advantage of the journey to pull out some Lore Questions. He discovers that the cart he was supposed to escort has already been run off the road (so no further blots on his copybook) and is unsurprised to discover that the culprits are still around. Those dealt with he sets off in pursuit of a missing apprentice and some stray horses. After some initial confusion he rides the horses back to their stable while discussing more Lore and then proceeds to a farmstead to find out why it has fallen silent. Some small noises alert him to the presence of more intruders in some surprising places, and he is able to free some hostages: he is disappointed to identify their captor, but not enough to show any mercy. His journey in search of the apprentice allows for more Lore discussion before being rudely interrupted by being killed, which whisks him across the landscape and gives him a cruel glimpse of some intriguing ruins which will have to wait till later. He reports first to the individuals who gave him the errands, then to the Auctioneer, who is curiously distracted and directs him to the Thane. The latter is intrigued by Gryfflet's recounting of his adventures and decides to have a word with the Auctioneer, who has vanished to the surprise of nobody. This would seem to be the last straw for the Thane, who decides to send his people, including his family, to safety: he tasks Gryfflet with readying the waggons for the trip and then prepares for death as the invaders approach. Happily Gryfflet is able to persuade him otherwise and they achieve their escape by the skin of their teeth, although serving the Auctioneer his just deserts softens the blow. He is returned to Edoras to report to Éowyn and decides to advance his questing there before venturing elsewhere. This includes remonstrating with feuding twins Sigun and Sigmar who remain intransigent, although there might be someone who can help. Gryfflet encounters some melancholy folk who spout bad poetry much to his annoyance, but his spirits are roused when the Riders Four show up and ask him to aid them in their preparations which he is only to happy to do, although he is not quite finished before the session ends.

"That's not what's curious to me!"
"It's a little odd but it works for me!"
"Being plural doesn't make them any more collective!"
"It's quiet…too quiet!"
"He was not just sloppy!"
"Oooh! What is th…I'm in Stoke? How did I get up here? Where even is this?"
"I look forward to returning and checking out those ruins!"
"He's barely taller than me!"
"What did I do, exactly, to 'ready' it?"
"Hey, come pick on somebody far smaller than you!"
"I will think upon those lines, and the first thing that I notice is that they're terrible!"
Lore discussed this week included the development of Adûnaic in the context of JRRT's language construction in general, and some gloriously nerdy details of his word choices relating to hyphenation and capitalisation. We also discussed how slavery is portrayed in the story and mention was made of the Professor's ongoing study of Dante's "Inferno".
