MOVING TO DENMARK FOR SOMEONE ELSE: Advice for the Trailing Spouse or Partner
MOVING TO DENMARK FOR SOMEONE ELSE: Advice for the Trailing Partner
#Denmark #Danmark #Expat
This video is about what it's like moving to Denmark for someone else - being a trailing spouse or partner.
We received a message from a couple who are going to be moving to Copenhagen for one of their jobs. The other part of the couple, the trailing partner, will be moving to Denmark too. This will, of course, result in some challenges.
Since this is the same situation that we were in - moving to Denmark for Mike's job and Derek starting over from scratch - we decided to offer some advice.
Most people find themselves moving to Denmark for work on an expat contract. This means that they're well taken care of but may still face issues for the trailing partner.
Our advice won't make all of the problems go away, but it can make things easier. Here are the expat tips and advice that we have for anyone moving to Denmark for someone else.
First, don't worry about what other people think of your situation. All that matters is what you decide as a couple and that you are happy with your new Danish life.
Living in Denmark seems exotic and thrilling, but you may still have some down days. Our second piece of advice is that you're allowed to feel unhappy. Both members of the couple will have unique feelings and challenges - it's okay to ride this out and feel all of the emotional adjustments.
Third, communicate, communicate, communicate! It's so important for expats moving to Denmark to have an open dialogue. Let each other know what is going on in your minds.
Next, keep in mind that both partners will be contributing - even if it's not financial. Support is a key factor in the adaptation to your new Danish lifestyle. Being a trailing partner doesn't mean that you HAVE to do all the housework either.
Do things to help you integrate and meet people right away. It's important to make friends when you move to Denmark. This video can also help: https://youtu.be/isvUzWS1iIk
Don't forget to actually enjoy the experience. You're allowed to do other things, explore hobbies or new interests and passions.
You may want to limit your social media, or bear in mind that it can impact your moods. Homesickness, FOMO, and more can hit you when you dwell on social media. Even though it can help you keep in touch with family after moving to Denmark, it can drag you down too.
Lastly, keep in mind that you will have intense emotions. Your highs will be higher and your lows will be lower. Eventually, it will all return to the median.
