Building Mobile Units to Process Waste of Anaerobic Digestion Plants
Besides energy, #biogas plants also produce a by-product, the #digestate. With the right treatment, this digestate can be spread on the fields in an environmentally friendly way as #organicfertiliser. Untreated, however, they often pollute the environment with excessive nutrient concentrations and toxic substances such as antibiotic residues or microplastics. However, special technologies are needed to process the digestate, which small biogas plants often cannot afford.
The NOMAD project aims to create a mobile solution for processing digestate into organic fertiliser to help small biogas plant operators. Two trailers were built for this purpose. Trailer one is responsible for processing the digestate by separating the solids from the liquid fraction, macerating, pasteurising and filtering the digestate and preparing it for the second trailer. You could call it the "dirty part of the process". Trailer Two focuses on the secondary process steps and performs nutrient and grey water recovery and antibiotic removal. It is the so-called " lab on wheels".
Both trailers were built in the UK, with LEAP Micro AD as the main partner. Trailer Two has already been completed and was tested in 2022 &2023 at three demonstration sites with the prepared digestate from three different biogas plants. Trailer One is currently being completed in the UK and will complete its first digestate test in mid-2023.
Our aim: to make the mobile trailers available in the future for small farms in rural areas in Europe and beyond to process waste from anaerobic digestion plants and produce organic fertiliser and recycled water. Possibilities could include offering NOMAD as a service, as well as leasing models to reduce initial costs and facilitate the expansion of the circular economy.
