How AI can advance human stories, not overrun them | Joseph Couch | TEDxSydney

Rapid transformation is challenging the ways in which we tell stories. The increasing uptake of AI, notably Large Language Models, has shown that machines can create scripts and novels - something we once thought was "ours alone". This is raising existential questions around authorship and the future of creativity. Joseph and his team at Othelia are tackling these questions head-on. With a bespoke storytelling platform, they pose a solution in which the future of storytelling becomes a harmonious collaboration between AI and humans, where AI serves as a tool to support in the creation and structure of storytelling and humans remain where they should be, at the forefront of creativity. As Co-Founder & CTO for Omelia, Joseph is developing technology to improve the creative management of story production across film, television and gaming. He advises traditional studios and production companies on complex story world design and works with new media and gaming companies on interactive narrative.

Joseph has a diverse background. He has worked for global management consulting firms helping blue-chip companies transition to Digital 2.0. As a virtual reality engineer, Joseph wrote a calibration algorithm for the (then) world's largest panoramic (VR) camera. As a theatre director, Joseph was one of the youngest directors to work for the Sydney Theatre Company and Belvoir St Theatre. Joseph’s unique background gives him deep credentials in both structured and narrative thinking, and this skill set has enabled the development of a revolutionary new way of working with dramatic form.
