Schools and businesses in Huitzilac, a town in Mexico’s Morelos state, were eerily quiet on Tuesday. This followed the killing of five people on the same street where eight were slain eight months ago.

The victims, four men and one woman, were campaigning for local positions managing the community’s communal lands and forests ahead of March elections. They were ambushed by gunmen in two vehicles on the town’s main street, a grim reminder of the violence gripping the region.

“I told them not to participate, there are always problems,” said Blanca Delgadillo, whose son-in-law was among the victims.

Huitzilac lies in a troubled area plagued by competing criminal groups and illegal logging. Despite Mayor César Dávila Díaz’s condemnation of the attack, fear looms over the 20,000 residents who live amid sporadic security from local forces and the National Guard.
