The town of Monza

The area occupied by today's Monza was inhabited since the Iron Age . In Roman times, Monza ( then known as Modicia) became the area's most important settlement , even though it depended on the nearby Mediolanum ( Milan ) .Thanks to its position on the banks of the River Lambro amid extensive woodlands , the town became a crossroad between Milan and Brianza , the Bergamo - Como road of the North .

The first written evidence of the coronations of the kings of Italy taking place in Monza dates back to the 12th century. Frederick I ( Barbarossa ) crowned king of Italy in 1158 , put the town under imperil protection and built a large new palace using the material from the demolition of the city walls of Milan .

Towards the end of the 13th century , the structure of the town was characterized by a high concentration of monastic and convent buildings . The city moves away from the feudal power to the archpriest of the Cathedral , and chooses as its headquarters the Arengario .

Following the battle of Desio ,Monza saw a revival in the building activity , including the reconstruction of the Cathedral ( il Duomo ) completely rebuilt starting from the 31st of May 1300 )
During the 1800s , demographic growth went hand in hand with building projects that substantially changed the face of the town , the construction of the archduke's palace , the Villa Reale , between 1777- 1780 . A park was created in 1806 by the order of Napoleon I and in 1838 , Monza was given its official " città" ( city or large town ) status .

L'area occupata dall' ordierna era abitata fin dall'età del Ferro. In epoca romana ,Monza ,allora chiamata Modicia , diventa il centro più importante del territorio , pur restando dipendente dalla vicina Mediolanum ( Milano ) , grazie alla sua collocazione sulle rive del Lambro , fra ampie zone selvose , diviene uno snodo viario fra Milano e la Brianza , la via Bergamo - Como e il nord.

Le prime testimonianze scritte di incoronazioni di re d' Italia a Monza sono del XIII secolo : Federico I ,il Barbarossa , incoronato re d'Italia nel 1158 prende la città sotto la protezione imperiale e vi costruisce un nuovo grande palazzo utilizzando i materiali di demolizione delle mura di Milano .
Sul finire del XIII secolo la struttura urbanistica della città è caratterizzata da una forte concentrazione di edilizia conventuale e monastica . Il comune si allontana dalla potestà feudale dell' arciprete del Duomo e sceglie come propria sede l' Arengario .
Successivamente alla battaglia di Desio , la città conosce una ripresa dell' attività edilizia che interessa anche il Duomo , completamente ricostruito a partire dal 31 Maggio 1300 .
Nel corso dell' ottocento la crescita demografica si accompagna a una serie di interventi urbanistici che contribuiscono a dare un nuovo volto alla città ; la costruzione della villa Arciducale , fra 1777- 1780 .
Il parco nasce nel 1806 per volontà di Napoleone e nel 1838 Monza è riconosciuta " città".
