Communication and Language Development Birth–5 Years

You’re at a restaurant.

The waiter bends down and asks,

“What would you like?”

Your toddler looks at you.

Silent.

You quickly answer,

“She wants juice.”

It’s faster.

Easier.

But that silence?

That was thinking time.

At home, the morning sounds like this:

“Brush your teeth.”

“Wear your shoes.”

“Hurry up.”

All instructions.

Very little conversation.

Later, your child says,

“Doggy runned!”

You correct immediately,

“No, say it properly.”

And slowly…

they speak less.

The tablet sings ABC songs.

They can recite letters.

But when they’re upset,

they don’t have the words.

They ask,

“Where Papa?”

Again.

And again.

You sigh,

“I told you already!”

But repetition builds memory.

Back-and-forth builds language.

Language doesn’t grow from memorizing.

It grows from interaction.

From waiting.

From listening.

From modeling gently.

From turning:

“Doggy runned”

into

“Yes, the dog ran fast!”

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can give a child

is not the right answer…

But the space to find their voice.
