Supporting Holistic Development Through Play

It’s 10:20 AM.

One child is telling a full story about dinosaurs.

Another is pointing and saying, “Car.”

One is calm and focused.

Another is crying because the block won’t stand.

Same classroom.

Very different developmental levels.

You’re trying to design play

that reaches everyone.

Outside, rough play begins.

Someone pushes.

Someone grabs.

You step in -

not to stop play,

but to teach boundaries.

Inside, your camera is in one hand.

You need photos.

Observations.

Learning stories.

But while you’re documenting…

a child looks at you, waiting for connection.

After play, the room is a mess.

Paint on tables.

Sand on the floor.

Blocks everywhere.

Cleaning takes time.

Time you wish you could spend extending learning.

Then there’s the quiet child.

Watching from the corner.

Not joining.

You gently scaffold -

without forcing.

And the child who cries at every small challenge?

You encourage.

Not push.

Not pressure.

Because emotional safety comes first.

Teaching in early years isn’t just planning activities.

It’s balancing safety, development, documentation, inclusion, and emotions -

all at the same time.

So if today felt overwhelming…

Remember:

You’re not just managing behavior.

You’re designing environments

where every child - at every level -

can grow.
