How to add electrical breaker to panel - fix double tapped breaker
Many home inspections will reveal a double tapped breaker. This is basically when two wires are sharing a single pole breaker. This is a big no no with inspectors and for good reason. The wires may come loose, the breaker might not be equipped to handle the demand load on these wires and single breakers are not designed for double tapping.
In this video I separate 2 double tapped breakers and install 2 new breakers to resolve the issue. The process is fairly simple with no special tools required. I do use my Klein electrical pen/sensor, but you can do this job without it.
You will need to shut the power on the breakers or shut down the entire panel if you feel safer that way. Unscrews the wires from the breakers, and screw them back onto the new breakers. That is really it in a nutshell.
I am not an electrician as I mention in the video, but I have done a few of these myself and I am fairly comfortable with the process.
So, next time you want to run a new feed to your panel, repair a double tapped breaker or add more breakers to your panel, consider doing it yourself and save $100s in the process.
