On February 19, 1945, the 4th Marine Division landed on Iwo Jima, fighting through loose volcanic sand, heavy fire, and deeply buried Japanese defenses. In about twenty days, the division drove across its zone to the southeast coast, but paid a staggering price with more than 9,000 casualties.
