On November 15, 1942, Kirishima entered Iron Bottom Sound expecting to help bombard Henderson Field and crush what Japanese lookouts thought were American cruisers. Instead, she ran into USS Washington, whose radar-directed 16-inch gunfire devastated the battleship and sent her to the bottom off Guadalcanal.
