Our sailing travels have brought us to Marathon Florida. We have been exploring the Marathon area and doing boat repairs. We have also found time to hang out with our friends, the Redpaths. When we arrived at the marina where they were docked, we took the dogs for a much needed walk. As we were walking, we were surprised by our very first close encounter with a manatee! We saw a second, smaller manatee a bit further into the marina that seemed to be having a great time just resting in the water. When we got back to the boat, the dogs were pretty excited for a water break. In true Mondo-style, he turned it into a great chance for an impromptu bath. It was so much fun getting to hang out with the Redpaths, enjoy some fantastic foods, and soak up the incredible Florida Keys weather.
The next morning we headed out to go snorkeling near Sombrero Beach. It was a beautiful dinghy ride traveling through the mangroves and arriving in the Atlantic Ocean on the other side. Mondo was so excited to hop in the water with us and was quite the exuberant doggy paddler. I coaxed Penny into the water and she seemed rather content to try to use Mondo and I as buoys and save the swimming for emergency use only. Right after we anchored the dinghy, we saw what we think was a nurse shark swimming in the shallows. It was so nice to be back underwater after almost a year since our last snorkel or dive. As John got to a bit deeper water, he started seeing more fish and plenty of sea grass. He was really surprised when he saw a large Spotted Eagle Ray approaching and even more surprised when it circled around him before heading off into deeper water. While John was snorkeling close by, Julie took the dogs to shore to explore a tiny island. We saw a large horseshoe crab, tons of sea sponges, and thousands of snails covering the rocks. All in all, it was a fantastic day trip!
Later, we got to work fixing our Jabsco manual marine head and replacing the fuel pump on our Tohatsu 3.5hp outboard. The joker valve replacement for the marine head worked well, but the outboard is still out of commission. We will continue troubleshooting our broken 4-stroke outboard motor another day.
