Overnight Sail to the Bahamas! - Sailing ShaggySeas Ep. 26
This week, we sail out of the Florida Keys for an overnight passage to Bimini in The Bahamas!
After several weeks in Marathon, it was great to be back on the water sailing to The Bahamas. The dogs are getting quite comfortable on the boat and have grown to really enjoy our days at sea. Mondo loves running around deck taking in the new sights and smells with the wind in his face, and Penny loves the extra time with us on deck in the sun. As we left the Florida Keys, it was so incredible to see a large pod of dolphins in such beautiful clear water.
As the day turned into night, the seas remained rough until we got closer to the Gulf Stream. The Gulf Stream is a strong current that runs north-east between Florida and The Bahamas and up the East Coast of the United States. Once we reached the stream, it increased our speed by two and a half knots.
We enjoyed a beautiful sunrise and finished our sail to Bimini by midday. We saw the most beautiful water as we made our way to Browns Marina to dock and complete customs and immigration.
After we were officially checked in to The Bahamas, we took the dogs on a walk. We headed down the main road and found a nice little beachside forest surrounded by beautiful shoreline. This was the first time the dogs were setting foot in another country, and their first time on a tropical beach. Near the beach, we saw an old, rusted shipwreck up against the rocks.
After months of travel and over a year of planning, preparation, and hard work, it felt incredible to have reached The Bahamas.
