Waehron Waemana

We Muslims begin with, “Peace be upon you.” My full name is Waehron Waemama. Today I’ll discuss some aspects of Pattani’s history and the kris dagger. The kris dagger is used in Pattani’s traditional martial arts called, “silat”.
I once saw a kris in a village called Nong Chik.
With one glance, I knew it had unusual power. I said it was beautiful. The owner said it belonged to his great-grandfather when he was head of the village. He carried the kris with him and if there as a fight, as soon as the two sides touched that kris - instantly there would be peace. People there called it the peacemaker. Wherever he went, it brought people together again. Believe if or not but this is the story I was told.

กริช เป็นมีดสั้นแบบหนึ่ง ใบมีดคดแบบลูกคลื่น เป็นเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะในหมู่ผู้คนในประเทศมาเลเซีย อินโดนีเซีย และห้าจังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้ของไทย กริชนั้นเป็นทั้งอาวุธและวัตถุมงคล บ่งบอกถึงเหตุดีร้ายในชีวิตได้ ปัจจุบันยังนิยมสะสมเป็นของเก่าที่มีคุณค่าสูง

คำว่า กริช ในภาษาไทย น่าจะถอดมาจาก keris ในภาษามลายู ซึ่งหมายถึง "มีดสั้น" คำนี้รับผ่านมาจากภาษาชวาโบราณอีกทอดหนึ่ง คือ งริช หรือ เงอะริช หมายถึง "แทง" ภาษาต่าง ๆ ในยุโรป ใช้ว่า kris ตามมลายู

เชื่อกันว่ากริชนั้นเริ่มมีใช้ในเกาะชวา แล้วแพร่หลายไปทั่วหมู่เกาะอินโดนีเซีย ผ่านไปยังเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ปัจจุบันเป็นที่รู้จักในมาเลเซีย บรูไน ฟิลิปปินส์ตอนใต้ กัมพูชา ภาคใต้ของไทย สิงคโปร์ และแม้กระทั่งเวียดนาม
