Master Lee carves traditional Chinese signboards from his workshop in Penang, Malaysia. “I don’t care about money,” he says. “I do this as a hobby."

But after he fights with an old signboard master for money, is he lying? Cut deeper and we see he is conflicted with himself. Does he want cash or admiration from others?

After following one Chinese-Malaysian craftsman for a week - a definite answer is still hard to find. Master Lee's example shows that our motivations for working are never black and white. They are mixed up, confusing, and contradictory - reflecting our own humanity.
