Yoho National Park: Hiking Lake O'Hara Fire Road to Lake O'Hara
Accessing Lake O'Hara in Yoho National Park is either through the four shuttles heading in each morning or hiking in. No personal transportation, including bike, is allowed. As there are only four buses heading in each day, winning the lottery for a seat is very rare. We were not lucky so we hiked Lake O'Hara Fire Road, which is about 11km (7mi) with an elevation gain of about 500m (1500ft) from the parking lot to the lake. The elevation gain is mostly going in so if we had to go out, it wouldn't have been too bad. Four buses heading in each morning, however, five buses head out each afternoon. Each bus has 32 seats. We hoped that we would be able to have seats on the bus going out. Luck was on our side as our shuttle going out, including us, was almost full with 30 of 32 seats occupied.
