Ramon Crater

Makhtesh Ramon is a geological feature of Israel's Negev desert. Located at the peak of Mount Negev, some 85 km south of the city of Beersheba, the landform is not an impact crater from a meteor nor a volcanic crater formed by a volcanic eruption, but rather is the world's largest "erosion cirque".

מכתש רמון הוא המכתש האירוזי הגדול בעולם. הוא מצוי בישראל ומהווה אחד מחמשת המכתשים שבנגב. ואחד מחמישים "שמורות אור בינלאומית" בעולם[1], נופו של מכתש רמון הוא ייחודי. על קצה המכתש מצויה העיירה מצפה רמון.
אורכו של המכתש כ-40 ק"מ, רוחבו המרבי כ-9 ק"מ ועומקו המרבי כ-350 מטר. במזרח, מחולק המכתש על ידי הר ארדון לשתי בקעות: בקעת ארדון ובקעת מחמל. רוב שטחו של המכתש מנוקז על ידי נחל רמון, שנקרא בערבית "ואדי א-רוּמאן", ייתכן משום שרומאים עברו באזור זה, בדרך הבשמים.
