Armed resistance against the Taliban has emerged in Afghanistan in the weeks since the hardline group seized control of the nation’s capital, Kabul. The first assault by resistance fighters reportedly drove the Taliban from three northern districts on August 20, 2021, after as many as 30 Taliban militants were killed and another 20 were captured. Other anti-Taliban forces, some made up of former members of the Afghan military, have also formed, including one group called the National Resistance Front (NRF). Based in the Panjshir valley, the NRF is led by Ahmad Massoud. He is the son of Ahmad Shah Massoud, a top anti-Soviet and anti-Taliban commander who was slain 17 years ago by suspected al-Qaeda operatives and considered by many to be a national hero. Former Afghan vice-president Amrullah Saleh, who has declared himself acting president of Afghanistan, has also called on followers to fight the Taliban in the valley northwest of Kabul.
