Tomcat's Big Adventure – All Currently Public & Available Footage! (1990s)
To celebrate Mother's Day, here's another awesome discovery of media and a bonus upload for the weekend!
Tomcat’s Big Adventure, or Chibi Neko Tomu No Daibouken (listed as ちびねこトムの大冒険 地球を救え!なかまたち in Japanese), is an early nineties children's film directed by Ryūtarō Nakamura, who served as the director for the Serial Experiments Lain (1998) and Kino's Journey (2003) movies. The film was originally conceived as an educational short film to teach children in Japan the language of English, but it soon evolved into a full-length animated film without the parts that included teaching English.
The film is about six children on summer vacation who become tasked with saving the Earth by taking on different challenges and obstacles. Ironically, the film itself also went through several challenges itself. During the course of five years in production and becoming fully completed, the film's release was unfortunately canceled. This was due to the studio losing money by its completion and Japan’s economic bubble bursting in the early 90s. The film did not receive a wide theatrical run and only aired over regional Japanese TV during the 90s. There have also been claims that the film was bootlegged in Asia within the same decade, but with no solid proof at this time, it is only up for speculation.
Despite the film's simple plot and general obscurity, it was touched by a lot of juggernauts in the anime industry, whose work would be celebrated today. As an example, animators Koichi Arai and Toshiyuki Inoue, who worked on Akira (1988) and Ghost in the Shell (1995), respectively, were involved with the production with Manabu Ohashi. They were one of the creatives from Madhouse, Inc. and a key animator for Metropolis (2001).
When I was watching the whole collection of clips that have been released online, I noticed that the animation maintains a high level of quality with the character design and backgrounds exuding much charm. This upload is basically acting as a mirror of all publicly available footage of the film for posterity's sake and to possibly help more people know about this film. I have found around 40 minutes of clips that have been released online of the film, with most of this footage missing its respective audio tracks for the overall duration of eleven minutes. The film's actual reported runtime is around 85 minutes, so this is currently a piece of lost media that has yet to be found in its completed state.
I hope you enjoy this upload of a very obscure Japanese film! I'd like to thank BolbiusMaximus for their help in making these clips viewable online for everyone to see. Thank you so much for watching, and have a great Mother's Day!
