The book of 1 Kings begins with David as old, feeble, and bed-ridden. His son Adonijah proclaims himself king with the help of David's commander Joab and the priest, Abiathar. Upon hearing this news, David instructs the prophet Nathan to anoint his son, Solomon, as his successor. The people of Israel unite with David and Solomon in a grand procession to the royal throne. God gives wisdom to King Solomon who leads Israel to greatness.
