What's My Line? - "Great Performances". . . WML-Style! [CLIPS VIDEO]
From Louis Armstrong singing an impromptu chorus of "Hello, Dolly!" acapella, to Art Carney doing his dead-on impressions of John Daly and FDR, to singing garbagemen and Fred Astaire tap dancing his way off stage. . . here's a new clips video of all the times we could collectively remember and identify when a guest on WML was actually allowed to display their talents for a few precious minutes during the show.
While demonstrations and stunts were the norm on the later syndicated series, the CBS run under John Daly's stewardship always strove above all else for a certain high class polish and sheen that he felt would be compromised if the show strayed more often into this territory. It's always struck me as somewhat akin to inviting a plumber over for a fancy dinner party and asking him to fix your toilet after dessert. But these rare moments were so special, I do wish they happened a bit more often than they did.
Usually, it was Arlene who would request that a guest sing or dance a bit, and it was usually John who immediately squashed the request. But as you'll see in this video, sometimes even John himself was the one who made the request!
Featured in this video, along with a handful of non-celebrity guests:
Fred Astaire
The McGuire Sisters
Ray Bolger
Beatrice Lillie
Harlem Globetrotters
Art Carney
Arthur Murray
Vaughn Meader
Louis Armstrong
