Wandering Burg Baldenau in Germany

Burg Baldenau is a moated castle in Germany.

From the year 1315, it was built by the Archbishop Balduin von Trier to secure the Kurtrier rule. The castle was mainly directed against the Counts of Sponheim. The counts were rival territorial rulers of Trier in this area. In 1332, Baldwin received from Emperor Ludwig in a collective privilege the city ​​rights for a settlement near Baldenau; but it never came to such a foundation. The castle was named for the Kurtrierische office Baldenau, which included fifteen surrounding villages. In the 15th century are with Rulmann von Partenheim and Clas von Nattenheim two officials handed. Also in the 15th-century castle and office was pledged to nobles, an indication of the low importance of the castle at this time.

After several damages in the Thirty Years' War, it was repaired in 1649, but finally in 1689 in the Palatine War of Succession by French troops under Louis XIV permanently destroyed. The castle is about 52 meters long, up to 20 meters wide and has the shape of a wedge. In the southwest in the tapering part of the castle is the striking, 24 -meter-high round three-story keep. It has a diameter of 10.5 meters with a wall thickness of up to 3.2 meters. On the opposite side rise the rather sparse towering remains of the main building. It had at least three floors, which were accessed via a staircase tower. The kitchen was on the ground floor (readable from the remains of the kitchen fireplace on the east side). The water supply was ensured by a well (this was next to the entrance of the castle). On the long sides, the castle is surrounded by a ring wall surround. The wall is pierced by slot slits and originally carried a battlement. The courtyard was built with smaller buildings, the remains of which appeared during the excavation work.
