Lars-Erik Larsson Concertino for Viola and String Orchestra - Ching Juhl, Viola Solo
Moderato - Concertino for Viola and String Orchestra (1956) by Lars-Erik Larsson (1908-1986)
Shanghai Chamber Orchestra
Ding Zhinuo, Conductor
Ching Juhl, Viola Solo
He Luting Concert Hall
Nov. 22nd, 2003
Story time:
An educator and filmmaker, I started to play the piano at 7 years old, with my mother who was a professional pianist. At 11, when I saw my neighbor was planing the violin, I decided to play the violin too. "Violinist reads only one line of music" I thought it would be easier than the piano. I studied violin and practiced 3 hours everyday, thanks to my mother. I was making good progress. At 15, I joined Shanghai Youth Orchestra, and the orchestra was short of the viola players. I tried the viola and felling in love with the sound. I have been a violist ever since.
Winning a top prize at Guranna International Viola Competition, graduating from Shanghai Conservatory of Music and Indiana University, I have played with Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Phoenix Symphony, subbed with Pittsburgh Symphony and even backed up in Rod Steward's band. I taught music appreciation at St. Joseph's College. I direct and teach violin/viola at Music Studio Manhattan. I am a filmmaker and I spend lots of time working on film and video projects.
This audio recording was a live performance of me and the Shanghai Chamber Orchestra, conduced by Ding Zuinuo. Larsson's Concertino for Viola and String Orchestra is a beautiful piece, and it suites for professional musician as well as advanced students.
