Value, Light Source and Living Color - part 2 Florals

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!

We continue with value, contrast and light source... but this time with color!

This BobBlast is all about how I use the same approach when painting a vase of flowers. It’s a loose approach, so I’m using my large goof-ball brushes, paper towels and fingers to block out the light and dark areas.

I started with a canvas that I describe as a “turkey” - it just didn’t work out! I had started a vase of flowers and I decided that it would be a dandy underpainting as a jumping off point for a new painting. It is very monochromatic and flat - perfect!

Let’s talk about the light source first. I am focused on the light source coming from the LEFT. Just like the ball and coffee cup in the previous BobBlasts, I anchor my vase of flowers on a table, and knowing the direction of the light source, I sketch in my shadow.

I commit to the focal point: The brightest parts are closest to the light (the focal point “flower”) and the darkest parts are the furthest from the light. I know that sounds obvious - but when I am in BobLand, I need to be reminded!

The focal point is found at the most dramatic contrast. Remember, Dark Against Light, Dark Against Light.

I will exaggerate this in my work sometimes - just to make me snicker!

Paint your dead paintings into Living Color with
* A Strong Light Source
* A strong Color Combination
* A strong Composition
* A strong Commitment
* And Contrast in the back of your mind

Do more work that makes you snicker!
