How to Set Bicycle Saddle Tilt

Do I have the correct saddle tilt? Tipped too far forward and my shoulders will ache and my hands will get numb as I'm pushing back on the handlebars; tilted to far back and I'll feel as though I'm sliding off the back of the saddle. We show you how to adjust bike seat angle using a carpenter level to achieve a 0 degree tilt (as a starting point) to obtain the best saddle comfort and best cycling performance. You will need a carpenter level from your local hardware store or online.

Start with a level flooring to place the bicycle (check the flooring with your carpenter level that you are on a level surface). Loosen the seat bolt that attaches the saddle to the seat post with the hex wrench. Start with leveling the seat. Place the carpenter level from one sit bone surface to the tip of the of the seat. Don't use the middle of the seat which often has a central depression. Should the bike seat be level? For the most part, the bicycle saddle should be level! Start with setting the bubble in the middle and try it out. From here you can make minor adjustments tilting forward depending on your comfort level. These minor adjustments to bike seat angle depend on the saddle itself and involves only 1 or 2 degree forward tilt if needed.

This is true for a road bike or mountain bike and is necessary when doing routine maintenance, changing saddles or to increase cycling comfort. If you can't find a saddle position which is comfortable, consider two options:
1. A better saddle that fits your "sit bone" width.
2. A bike fit.
