04:48 Road ID: Which type should you own?

1. The valve core of presta valve may unscrew when you remove the CO2 cartridge after inflating a new spare tube (card). To prevent this, use a valve core removal tool (sells for about $10). Remove the valve core on your spare bicycle tube, add drop of red (high strength) Loctite to the threads. We show you how to replace the valve core and tighten the core firmly on the valve stem with the valve core removal tool before packing your spare tube in your saddle bag of your bike. Now should you get a flat tire on your bicycle, using and removing a CO2 cartridge has eliminate one of the problems of CO2 cartridge failure.

2. Use cable sleeves to protect cables and bike frame. Non-friction, none slip and you don’t have to worry about where to put frame protector tape. Comes in colors including clear. Can get up to 10 for under $8. Use black on my mountain bike and cross bike and clear on my road bike.

3. Use a bar end plug to customize your bike and prevent the plugs from dislodging. They come in a variety of types (see description). Make sure they tighten with hex wrench which expands the inner core of the plug to secure it from falling out of the handlebar but also makes for easy removal. They vary in price with some cool ones from Kustomcaps.

4. I use Simonize wax from your local NAPA store to polish and protect frame and keep it looking bright (non matte finish). One can from auto store will last the life of your bike, keep it protected from the elements while keeping it looking new (about $12 for 7 oz).) On the other hand, a can of Pledge polish can give your bike a shine so it looks like new. Don't use furniture polish for wood which has oils that are taken up by the wood. Look for something like Pledge ENHANCING Polish which is glycerin and paraffin based rather than an oil to clean and polish. Doesn’t last as long as some bike wax and car wax but easy to apply and inexpensive.

5. For matte finish, DO NOT USE PLEDGE OR SIMINOZE ON MAT FINISH. Mat finishes have a grove like surface and Simonize or Pledge fills in those surfaces to make them become shiny, no longer mat. Instead use a thinner, liquid wax that will preserve the matte look of your frame such as Meticulous Matte Detailer & Spray Sealant.

6. Seat covers can protect your car seat when you drive home after sweaty rides or riding in the damp wet weather. This one the best seat cover comes from Leader Accessories for Bucket Seat. They are a relatively cheap seat cover, fits all bucket seats, soaks up wetness while protecting your car seat. And you can throw it in the washer and drier to keep your car smelling fresh. To keep it from moving around when you get in and out of the car, either tie it down or tuck it in where the back of the seat meets the cushion. Cost about $26 but well worth it.

7. A high visibility daylight running bike light will improve safety by making you more visible to traffic. You need one at least 800 lumens to be effective. We have tried a number of manufacturers front lights and rear lights. The Bontrager Flare R led tail light is one of the best we’ve used with over ¼ mile or more visibility. For front lights we like the Night Rider at $55 and up. However, I blink mode it only lasts about 3 1/2 hours. Also, the Autoplus USB Rechargeable 800 lumen head light. This later, when in blinking mode, lasts well over 8 hours and can be seen for over ¼ mile in bright sunlight. I recharge it after each ride as a precaution which take about 2 ½ hours. Sells for only $22 and is one of my favorites.

8. Road Id, best way to alert your family as well as carry important information concerning allergies and health should you ever need it. When EMTs arrive or you arrive in the ER, helmets have already been removed and clothing cut away. Often your wallet has been separated from you and it may be hours before someone looks in your wallet. The only tag that will get noticed immediately is the id bracelet on your wrist (dog tag IDs will sometimes be removed before exam but are another alternative). A must for riders.
