Сергей Иванович Щукин (1854-1936) был успешным Московским купцом и известным коллекционером преимущественно авангардной французской живописи. К 1914 году его коллекция насчитывала 258 произведений искусства (в том числе 50 работ Пикассо и 38 работ Матисса). После революции 1917 года коллекция была национализирована. В 1918 году Щукин эмигрировал в Германию, а затем поселился во Франции. В последствии, коллекция была разделена между Пушкинским музеем изобразительных искусств в Москве и Эрмитажем в Санкт-Петербурге, где она хранится и по сей день.
